We have made of him a miracle worker, and ascribed all sorts of 'Startrekian' tech to him. But lets keep things down to earth, just for a moment.

A movie produced in the 1980's called "The Water Engine" set the stage for all manner of conjecture.And at some points was true.

But when something makes an arc in a water tank, in the 1920's, we're not talking about anything like Poynting Force or anything more scientific than a simple arc in water. If the potential is high enough, simple arcs happen. Ask any power engineer on a nuclear submarine.

A water engine is a good idea, but not a great one. It's more efficent than the gasoline powered reciprocating engine. On the other hand, a big rubberband is also more efficient.

A water engine requires the water tank because a reaction cracks the water into hydrogen and oxygen. Then these gasses are recombined in a fuel cell, which makes electricity to power a motor. It's very simple, and can replace gasoline as a matter of efficiency conversations.

But by today's standards, it's relatively rube-goldbergian, and we can do better.
