MEPs Believe Brussels Talks Were Honest and Should Continue

After ten-hour long talks between Nikola Gruevski and Zoran Zaev in Strasbourg, the three MEPs, within their role as mediators, Ivo Vajgl, Eduard Kukan and Richard Howitt, released a brief statement saluting the "honest discussion".

They referred to the talks held on Tuesday night at the European Parliament between the VMRO-DPMNE and SDSM leaders in the presence of the aforementioned mediators, saying they expect the discussions to continue, Telegraf.mk reads.

In the context of the ongoing talks, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and the leader of the main opposition party, Zoran Zaev, have met with Ivo Vajgl, Eduard Kukan, Richard Howitt and Commissioner Johannes Hahn in Strasbourg on May 19-20. The MEPs and Commissioner Hahn welcome the efforts of the party leaders to work on reaching an agreement in the interest of all citizens of the country and tackling the challenges arising from the crisis in accordance with European standards.

"The parties have confirmed their commitment to the EU integration and their dedication to democratic principles, and have agreed that the interests of the country must come first. The MEPs and Commissioner Hahn have saluted the honest discussion on the issues of disagreement. All parties have agreed that it is important that the meetings continue," reads the joint press release of the three mediators and the EU Commissioner.

The VMRO-DPMNE delegations is comprised of the party president, Nikola Gruevski, Martin Protoger, Nikola Todorov, Nikola Poposki and Saso Mijalkov, while Macedonian MP Vlatko Gjorcev, who joined the team in Strasbourg, was also there.

The SDSM delegation features, leader Zoran Zaev, Renata Deskoska and Robert Popovski.

On Wednesday, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet and address the largest political group in the European Parliament - the European People's Party, whose member is also VMRO-DPMNE. The premier's speech comes in the eve of the evening's debate on Macedonia's situation at the EP. A vote on a resolution has not been planned to take place after the European lawmakers' discussion.

The negotiations between the authorities and the opposition will resume on Tuesday in Skopje, when the first meeting between leaders Zaev and Gruevski is scheduled to take place, which will also see the presence of DUI and DPA heads, Ali Ahmeti and Menduh Thaci respectively.
