I had friend who had a pet 'coon and also a pet brown bear.. He used to ride with it in the bed of his pick-up truck...

I don't mind 'coons. One used to come into the kitchen, eat the catfood, sit on the feeding station table for a while and groom, or just hang out. She got along well with the cats. She'd use the litterbox on the balcony, sit or lie on the railing, groom some more or just hang, then leave. She didn't run from us. Never tried to pet her, but it was OK if we were just a couple of feet from her. Unfortunately someone poisoned her. I found her dead on the sidewalk on one of my walks. We missed her.

When we were in the east wing before it burnt up, I fed a family of 'coons, and they'd come right up to me. I wonder if they wanted to be petted, but I'm not that stupid. Management told me to quit feeding them, though. Everyone was terrified of them. I thought they were the sweetest things.

Now a possum comes up to the balcony every night. I leave it cat food. It's afraid of us, though; and will run if we come into the kitchen, even if the door is closed. But it will come in and eat cat food if the door is open and no one is visible, then it goes away.
