He was certainly a very different man to his brother, Baldwin I.

Godfrey/Geoffrey was chosen to be the first king of Jerusalem,
but refused the kingship, opting instead to be known as "The Defender of the Holy Sepulchure". He died in 1102 IIRC & then Baldwin had himself crowned as king.

Godfrey(I know him as Godfrey,so I'll call him that) was known to be incredibly pious, much more so than the other leaders, he was said to be a lion on the battlefield & unbeatable in single combat --- he was also said to break down & cry after battles, prostrate himself & ask for Gods forgiveness.

He was a large man, whereas Baldwin was smaller IIRC.

Hypothesis:

Godfrey was of merovingian blood perhaps the heir to the legacy of Dagobert & all that might mean(Sang Raal), his adoptive parents may have been guardians of that legacy. Perhaps, after 450 years, there was no proof of the legacy, just infomation passed down the generations(gold bees etc lost or stolen). Then,
certain discoverys made under Temple etc confirmed the verbal legacy & Templars formed with a secret goal to guard that legacy.
