Gaslighting is a sin

In the 16th chapter of Romans, Paul gives warning against those who create dissensions and hindrances within the faith community. He describes such deceivers as ones who use smooth talk and flattery in order to distort truth and manipulate others. Regardless of how righteous, justified, and even sincere as these deceptive people may appear, Paul calls them out for what they are, focused only on their own selfish and self-serving desires. Although the term did not exist in the days of scripture, Paul was referring to manipulative practice known today as gaslighting.

The term originated in a stage play, and later movie, called “Gas Light.” In the plot of the drama, a manipulative husband gradually dims the gas lights of their home, but deceitfully convinces his wife that she is imagining the reduction in light. In the course of the narrative, she slowly loses her mind to his vile and seditious manipulation. Since then, the term gaslighting has referred to the deliberate deceit people use to manipulate others into questioning their own sanity, their own perceptions of reality, and their own grasp of the truth. As Paul makes clear in the 16th chapter of Romans, it is a sin that violates God’s will.
