What are the sins of gaslighting?

The most common, modern word for gaslighting is abuse, though abuse is a much broader term that encompasses many sins, i.e., verbal abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, violence, anger, etc. A gaslighting abuser will use this technique because of the premeditated goal to make the person believe his agenda.

Gaslighting is the mental manipulation that someone does to another individual. It’s a psychological maneuver of abusive-type people who want to control you by making you believe you’re guilty of something you did not do. If they persist, you may give up and accept what they say even if, in your heart of hearts, you don’t believe it.

In the 16th chapter of Romans, Paul gives warning against those who create dissensions and hindrances within the faith community. He describes such deceivers as ones who use smooth talk and flattery in order to distort truth and manipulate others.

Gaslight, a 1944 movie, brought the concept from a 1939 play to the big screen. A husband attempts to deceive his wife into thinking she is crazy. While he uses several tactics, the gas lights in the home were primary means. He cleverly causes them to flicker. When his wife notices the flickering lights, he denies it. He wants to convince her that she cannot believe her eyes. If she cannot believe her eyes, then maybe she cannot believe any of her senses. If she cannot trust her senses, then maybe she cannot trust her thoughts. Once confused, her husband can hide his own wicked behavior.

I think it is wise to restrict the term gaslighting to intentional acts with the purpose of harming the victims’ ability to understand reality. When one does that, Romans 16:18 stands out. It says, “For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.”

Dear RM Agents and Readers,

Genesis and Satan tempting with the apple was one of the first forms of gaslighting.

I was told by my present gaslighter that they wanted my home and that I would just sign it over. It will not happen because I have faith in God and have done nothing wrong. They have at several points attempted to make me look different than I am both times were a failure.

I wondered at the time what drugs the person was on and later if they were possessed? It sounds crazy, unless you saw it, it doesn't sound crazy at all. Was it an act? I don't know, they are good at acting.

There is a difference between acting from a script and acting in order to deceive to deprive another from their wealth. Part of the reason I was given this home has passed and that person told me that I might have to fight for it at some point. I really wasn't sure what they meant at the time but I am sure they understood much more than I about what they spoke of.

It astounds me especially in these times that person of this age
would risk their eternal soul for financial gain, it is beyond my understanding.
