The only negative I have noticed thus far, is that the parasites themselves can become immune to the effects of ivermectin if overused. Otherwise used as directed, it has only shown the beneficial effects of removing parasites which cause harm.

The canary in the coal mine would be if animals got sick from the use of ivermectin. Of course my observations are not a true scientific study, just my correlation of use and reviewing effects. I have been using it for our animals all my life. I have only seen one death from a rooster which got too much. He accidentally got one full cc of 1% sterile solution ivermectin orally. You can give this solution subcutaneously and orally.

Dosing is important. A rooster/chicken gets .1 CC's. After this happened I draw the syringe to .1 and then draw 1 ml of water to add to the dose. (Rather than having 1 cc of the ivermectin and dosing several chickens.) That being said, it has been the only death the entire time we have used ivermectin.

However, on the flip side of that, I have seen a colt (baby horse) accidentally get dosed with a full sized horse which is basically 9 X's the amount of what he should have gotten. The veterinarian was called, there were no ill effects and the veterinarian was not worried about the dose. So technically the rooster could have died from extraneous causes (perhaps from what I was treating him for to begin with?) No autopsy was done, so I do not know.

What I do know is that ivermectin had helped untold animals in my care without ill effects plaguing them in the outcomes.

There are certain dogs, (Collies and German Shepherds to name a few) who have a gene which expresses in extreme sensitivity towards ivermectin. They can and do have serious side effects from using ivermectin, so the owners would do well to know their breed of dog and whether or not they can handle ivermectin.
