The single-shaft is powered by a thermo-nuclear reactor OK-650V fourth generation 200 MW cooled pressurized water realized by Afrikantov OKBM. The control tower has an oval shape hydrodynamics, while the hull is divided into ten compartments.

Yasen class is designed to launch cruise missiles with conventional or nuclear warheads, engage submarines and surface units and hit coastal targets. In primary form, each submarine Yasen 24/32 carries cruise missiles on eight vertical launch tubes. Eight torpedo tubes 650 mm and two 533 mm.

The K-560 Severodvinsk, the first Russian attack submarine of Project 885 Yasen-class, was delivered on June 17, 2014. His long operational evaluation was completed in the spring of 2016, however, was delivered to the Navy with many doubts. The Navy General Staff would not be fully convinced of Severodvinsk for unspecified technical problems. A government commission set up for the occasion has authorized the entry into service with some improvements taken in subsequent Yasen. The K-560 was then successfully completed four rounds of sea trials. The improvements proposed by the Committee of the Russian Navy were implemented in K-561 Kazan, Novosibirsk K-573, K-571 and K-564 Krasnoyarsk Arhangel'sk, respectively, second, third, fourth and fifth submarine of the class. They are part of the 885m project, the Yasen-M class date. The yard of the sixth class submarine Yasen, Perm (photo), was officially opened last July. The Sevmash Shipbuilding Company, will launch next June production of the seventh and last unit of the fleet.

The class Project 885 Yasen / 885m, will be operational by 2023 and will replace the Oscar and Akula class submarines. The second Yasen class submarine will enter service later this year. Each class submarine Yasen has an average cost of 1.5 billion dollars, the equivalent of a third of Los Angeles and Seawolf class. The average cost of the Virginia class is $ 2.7 billion.
