Susan Peters - Possible Missing Link in the Death & Decline of Late Actress Susan Peters

When reviewing a person's brief biography there may be many questions on missing items and facts that readers wonder about. There is not a great deal of information immediately available online or in books concerning the latter part of the life of late actress Susan Peters who starred in 'Young Ideas', 'Random Harvest', 'Song of Russia', 'Keep Your Powder Dry', and other films of the forties. Most of the writeups attribute Susan's decline and death to complications from the spinal condition and injury from her hunting accident, or, there is listed depression, kidney disease, pneumonia, anorexia nervosa, etc., as contributing to her death.

Susan Peters was paralyzed from the waist down when she suffered a gunshot wound in a hunting accident in early 1945 while duck hunting with her husband and his relatives, but went on to make another film, 'The SIGN OF THE RAM' (1948) from her wheelchair. Later (1951) she had the lead role in a daytime tv soap, 'Miss Susan', which was later named 'Martinsville USA' and it was successful despite being canceled after about a 9 month run. If the series sold products for the sponsors over that much of a time length it was somewhat successful even though it was replaced with another series, so some would disagree with the articles that state the series was unsuccessful.

She had, reportedly, experienced ongoing health problems and may have caught a flu or illness from her young adopted son. Also, she may have called off an engagement to an Army Colonel, Col. Robert Clark, and may have been distressed about the failing health and engagement. Interesting is that some of the brief articles on her omit this time period of about late 1951 to early 1952 when she is said to have entered or been forced to enter a sanitarium, yet this may have been the key turning point in her failing health. Most all the articles available paint a broad picture of failing health over a period of time leading up to her death.

What is not clear is whether she voluntarily entered or was forced to enter the sanitarium. According to articles on other persons' experiences entering hospitals, clinics and sanitariums it is clear that some persons have been forced into such facilities and some were taken over and brutalized against their will.

After entering St. John's Hospital and Health Center in Santa Monica, Melissa Holliday was reportedly threatened with confinement in the fourth floor lock-up ward (where nobody could see her there and she couldn't go outside - a sort of solitary confinement type of situation) if she did not accept her scheduled electro-shock therapy.

To make a long story short, Melissa said the shock treatment is worse than the rape she endured and her career was ended, ruined by the electro-shock treatment.

Frances Farmer - famous film actress - forced to endure electro-shock in sanitarium

After her court appearance on the drunk driving charge, actress Frances Farmer was subsequently rushed off to a sanitarium where she, reportedly, underwent electro-shock treatments until she finally escaped to call her sister to help her. It is interesting that she was sent to get a brain re-arrangement instead of confinement and/or fine for the traffic charge.

So there are, indeed, reports of cases on record where persons were forcibly issued Electroconvulsive Shock Therapy, aka, ECG or 'shock treatment'. Such a list would probably be a very lengthy one if it could be made available.

The late actress, Susan Peters, was of slight build, a fairly small person who, from her wheelchair or bedside, would not have been very able to resist attempts to hospitalize her or refuse various treatments. When those who would take advantage of someone cannot find any other way they may try the mental illness routine and attempt to get a person committed to a mental ward.

This editor has been unable to find any such information on the late Susan Peters, but according to various articles and books she was psychologically scattered and depressed near the end of life and that is a state of mind relative to a shock treatment patient-victim. The statements of late actress and shock treatment survivor Gene Tierney bear this out.

Just Sayin

Before her stay in the sanitarium Susan Peters had a burning desire to act, to use her acting talent, but something happened during that time period that must have been a live-or-die deciding factor in what remained of her frail life. No information on what happened to her adopted son?

It may be that in the realm of political correctness it has become fashionable to cover up unsuccessful maimings by doctors of star personalities, particularly where death occurs fairly soon after treatments.

Susan died in 1952, shortly after that sanitarium visit.
