Among the icy glaciers of Greenland, not too far from the USAF air base of Thule (opening photo) - not to be confused with the Pan-German association with interests esoteric kind under the Nazis (...) - a secret underground base abandoned in 1967 is slowly coming to light because of a variable that the Pentagon had not properly calculated: climate change.

Dating back to the Cold War, classified as 'top secret' until very difficult times, the base was built in 1959 and called 'Camp Century'. It had to be what Cuba would be for the USSR: an advanced launch platform with the strategic aim of launching missiles ICBM (InterContinental Ballistic Missile) and MRBM (Medium Range Ballistic Missile) of Moscow and other fundamental objectives of the Soviet Union in the event of a nuclear escalation.

If in 1960 the base was protected by 35 meters of ice, today, due to the increase in temperature caused by climate change, are only 8 meters of ice covering the underground base which, ironically, began to operate under the 'scientific' cover to study climate change in the Arctic. At 50 years after its abandonment a new report on the basis arouses concerns Greenland, Denmark and the USA relying just on global warming and how much would remain of the base.

Although the official version of the Pentagon revealed that in fact were never stored nuclear warheads in the base - "as a result of the tests on the movement of Arctic ice cover that made it immediately clear that the underground tunnels would gradually collapsed" - 200,000 liters of diesel (53,000 gal), waste water, and an undetermined amount of nuclear waste produced by the first mobile nuclear generator installatovi 1960 were trapped in the 'city under the ice'. Although climate change also provides abundant snowfalls that icing from year to year recompose part of the Arctic ice cap, it is estimated that in 2090 the ice will start to melt even more rapidly than it is to give evidence: with the risk of bringing to light all the waste that the 'Camp Century' was left behind with potentially disastrous environmental outcomes.

The Pentagon said to "know fully the reality of climate change and the risks that could cause global warming in this case," adding that the US government has promised to "work with the Danish Government and the Greenland authorities to solve all the security issues of the case ".

Greenland was already at the center of an incident which caused the leakage of radioactive waste on its territory for American guilt when in January 1968 (one year formal abandonment of the base), a B-52G Stratofortress of the 380th Strategic Bomb Wing USAF crashed during the mission "Hard Head" causing to be declared a "code Broken Arrow" (accidents involving nuclear devices, ed): fact, the aircraft was carrying four hydrogen bombs B28FI (pictured below), which failed to explode due to systems security, but they released radioactive material during the subsequent fire the crash. All seven crew members were able to parachute.
