When did "boys" become "men"?

If you go back even further and watch some old movies, be they westerns or gangster films or war films from the 30's and 40's and maybe even the 50's and you will very often hear grown men refer to their group as boys. In all of these old films you would always hear someone in the group say something like; "Come on boys, let go!"

But then all of sudden one day they all somehow all grew up and they were no longer boys and they began referring to themselves as men.
