While I grew up in a Mid-Western big city, my relatives came from a tiny little town in North Carolina. Everyone there called young boys, well, boys. Or it was used in casual conversation as you described..

Neither did I see racism in that tiny town. It was predominately white, but there was a population of blacks as well. Everyone was polite to each other, they went to church together. My father saved the life of one of the town's favorite black ladies, or lady of color. She had heat stroke from working out in her garden. My dad saw her on the ground and carried her back to her house. There he cooled her down with ice and water. He grew up with this woman, she changed his diapers, wiped his tears, and fed him cookies and peach ice cream when he visited.

I met her a few times during visits, my grandmother took me to see her. She was very elderly, at the time. So nice and she did feed me cookies :-)

PS I had a dog named Spade (from the Ace of Spades) and one named Black-Jack. Both were black labs.

Re: 'Boy, I Say Boy' - What if 45 Went Foghorn....

This post brings back memories of not only Foghorn Leghorn, but the language and phrases used in my youth. I'm 75 and back in my day we all used the word 'boy' to express either anger or happiness. 'Boy, you sure are smart'!....'Boy, oh boy, oh boy, ain't that a pretty picture!'

Which expression hints of racism? Neither one does.

I'll be the first to admit Biden is not my favorite individual, but everyone must remember he is a product of the same time period as most of us were.

It wasn't until later in years that the black community didn't want to be referred to as 'colored people', and the word 'boy' was also included as a negative and racist word.

Then came the term 'people of color'. I guess white was not a color.

I understand Biden is on the SH*T list and is on his way out. But, let's call a 'spade a spade' when it comes to Biden's speak.
