Good question Richard.

I think there are many possible reasons. First, others - starting with the parents - are very emotionally involved . Perhaps it represents a lesson of some kind for them.

Second, I have observed that a baby can bring new energies through - energies that can affect those close to the birth, possibly even in a profound way.

Third, I suspect that dying during or soon after childbirth is as big an experience deal as doing so in old age.

My thoughts are probably just scratching the surface is to valid reasons.
