SAFETY BULLETIN - Reports of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning From Generator After Power Co. Shut Off Electricity

More reports online now state that the man and his seven children suffered carbon monoxide poisoning due to a generator they were using after the electric company had cut off their electricity.

It may seem hard to believe but this can happen very quickly and unexpectedly. This editor suffered ill effects once when using a generator which was outside a small mobile home. The wind had shifted and blown the exhaust over toward a window without any warning, of course. so not noticing it for awhile this editor began to feel noxious effects, got up, opened the door and stepped out, saw that the wind was blowing the exhaust straight into the trailer and shut the generator down. If you get dizzy try to get to some fresh air.

You have to be very careful when using heaters and generators or other engines and provide for the exhaust to go completely away from the structure your are in. The problem really is bad when people are sleeping and the gas is present because victims may not be able to awaken and fix the problem.
