My thanks to those Readers who have responded thus far. :)

One suggested installing the Mint Linux distribution, as it may prove to be smarter on ALSA than my currently installed Debian distro. I'm looking into doing that now if I can get it working as a dual boot item.

Another offered a particular link to what appeared to be a related discussion. As it turned out, that discussion did not lead to a working solution for the person whose question began that discussion.

I'm on Ubuntu & I type

alsamixer

in a terminal & can config my sound card there.

I've never had a webcam or headphones hooked up when I did this, but there are 'line-in' and aux settings at the end -- just hit F5 to toggle all settings, I think.

Unfamiliar with running Deb, but you might have PulseAudio running, as well, and that can be tricky. This might help:

(hobie here.) Thanks. :) I gather from comments on the web that changing settings in alsamixer doesn't actually alter ALSA's basic configuration; it does change a variety of output and record settings but does not change which output or capture (record) device ALSA will direct itself to.

Some on the Web have suggested PulseAudio is more controllable - however, it's also said Pulse relies on ALSA's configuration, so this leads back to the original question. I don't have PulseAudio installed at this time.
