Do we really need a brain-stimulating device to address ADHD?

Some have been suggesting ADHD is a label currently being given to "normal childhood behavior" when a child is told to sit still at his desk, be silent, and pay close attention to something he finds boring. Perhaps it's the school system that needs fixing. :)

Or, perhaps the child has functional hypothyroidism.

In the 1960s, Dr. Broda Barnes literally wrote the book on hypothyroidism. Along with many other things, he reported that when he normalized thyroid functions in his patient population, children exhibiting "hyperactivity" calmed down. Barnes theorized that, with low-functioning thyroid hormones, the youngsters over-compensated for the feelings of lethargy that resulted, just to keep awake. That is, the "hyperactivity" was a mechanism for dealing with the lethargy of low thyroid.

That's consistent with the similar finding that hyperactives often calmed down when given coffee. :)
