Back in the 1960s, Dr. Broda Barnes found that when he normalized thyroid function in his patients who were hyperactive, they calmed down. He theorized that youngsters with low-functioning thyroid hormones were hyperactive as a compensation for the lethargy and general sluggishness that can accompany that condition. Essentially, if they didn't continue behaving so actively, they were at risk of simply falling asleep.

It's generally held that both fluoride and chlorine may work to block iodine which is necessary to thyroid hormones.
