The research project that Dr. Blasey participated in was about comparing those different treatments for depression. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis are in a sense neutral processes or practices, which can be used for healing or other agendas. The article does not indicate that the hypnosis used in the study involved altering the memories of the subjects in the study - it just refers to the prior use of hypnosis in psychotherapy where that has been employed, usually to the benefit of the person treated. This is not a fringe therapy, it is a widely used and recognized effective therapeutic resource although it is under-used in the mainstream of mental health where talk therapy and pharma drugs are the usual treatments. This research article merely shows that Blasey would certainly be aware of the potential uses of hypnosis to either access or transform one's memories. Whether she applied this for herself or had a therapist working with her use hypnosis techniques on her is a question that should be explored. Any notes or details of such a session could help clarify her story. I personally find that energy healing and spiritually oriented hypnotherapy can foster profound healing from trauma - they shouldn't be discouraged in most cases, though there is certainly a potential for abuse of hypnosis by those with non-therapeutic motives or inadequate skills.
