On Evil

DISCLAIMER: I believe M Scott Peck in his book 'People Of the Lie' has misdiagnosed the majority of his clients (in the book) as Evil.

My definition of Evil is 'A Deliberate Intentional Act to Cause Harm To Another Directly or Indirectly'.

The Patients Dr. Peck describes are only Guilty of the following:

-Needy (suffocating relationships involving a partner)
-Going Through a Phase (Serial Lovers)
-Submissive (voluntarily acceding to a Dominant Relationship)

-Unthinking (Parent forcing their child to dye their hair blond)
-Ignorant (Parent giving depressed son the gun used by his older brother to kill himself, as a Christmas Present)
-Unwiillingness (Boundary Issue, where a parent won't provide money to an adult child)

In Authoritarian Relationships (Parent-Child, Boss-Employee), the inferior party may be treated as a 'tool' 'object' 'third wheel'.

Proposition: 'Inconsiderate' Behavior by those in Authority may cause a person to feel Unwanted or Unloved. That doesn't make the Authority Figure Evil. That's a side-effect of the current system of Child-Rearing and Earning a Living.

Dr. Peck tends to label people who think they are "Perfect' or 'Strongly Self-Willed' as Evil. As Patients, they refuse to see they have a Problem, and are Ill. Their Resistance to Treatment and Ongoing Disagreement with the Doctor, is finally interpreted by the Doctor as an indicator of Evilness.

I agree with Dr. Peck when he says that people who are considered Mentally Healthy in a Society, are the ones willing to submit themselves to something Higher (Authority, God) as part of getting along. Those who don't are more likely to be castigated by their peers, Authorities, Psychiatric Establishment as 'Problems'.
