I find this unsupported assertion pretty discredible, myself.

I'm not saying it's wrong. I'm saying I can't know it's right, and that personally I suspect it's not right.

We tend to lose sight of the distinction between "knowing" a thing, and simply having read stuff about that thing. When all we have is the latter, we don't "know"; we only "know-about".

Let's say there are indeed musty writings that talk about sacrificing children and virgins _into_ the physical construction. Finding that someone has written such a thing, even if the writer's conviction in the idea is apparent, doesn't make it so. We'd need more evidence than that.

I'd find it possible, however, that masons, seeking to keep their secrets, and also seeking not to be disturbed at their labors, might have started rumors about "what happens to children and young maidens who get too nosy and bother the men at their work".

I can find writings that say a certain schoolteacher in New England met up with a headless horseman one night and met his demise that way. Heck, I can even find "artist's renderings" of those reported events, that show the school teacher subsequently lost his own head and had it replaced with a malevolently grinning pumpkin. :) But I don't think it's true.
