All material that is sent to us is carefully reviewed, and information received from victims, their families, attorneys or other concerned parties informs research reports produced by Amnesty International. Please be assured that the information you provided will be helpful to us in chronicling patterns of abuse in prisons, jails, and detention centres, including ill-treatment, certain circumstances involving medical neglect and the death penalty (which Amnesty International opposes in every case), as well as patterns of abuse committed by police and other law enforcement officials.

Human rights violations occurring in the United States, including conditions in United States prisons and jails, were highlighted in a worldwide Amnesty campaign, and our reports generated much interest in the media, and with public officials, prison support groups and the public. We hope this public attention translates into a closer examination of the system, and genuine efforts to bring about improvements.

Re former government servant, Lester Coleman

The above-named is to appear before you on 3rd May, having been detained recently, for nine months, released for two days and then re-arrested.

These recent periods of detention are only the latest in a series of actions, by the Department of Justice, which have resulted in the beak-up of Mr. Coleman's family and the severe deterioration of his health.

It is generally believed, by human-rights groups around the world, furthermore, that the actions brought against Mr. Coleman, recently and in the past, are baseless and vindictive harassment, designed to suppress his opinions, in general, and his testimony in the Lockerbie case, in particular.

One would wish to be able too thank God that the Judiciary of the United States of America preserves its independence from the policies of the said Department of Justice.

One shudders at the prospect of the consequences, should this ever cease completely to be so.
