Lexington woman shot, killed at 19 in Costa Rica

Stephen Howell stood in his doorway for a moment last night and, in a soft, tired voice, said he couldn't describe the grief of losing a child.

``Tomorrow, maybe I'll be ready to talk tomorrow,'' Howell said.

Police in Costa Rica found the body of Howell's daughter, Emily, on the side of a highway Monday afternoon near a popular beach town, Cahuita, that officials there say has become increasingly notorious for criminal activity.

Next to Emily Howell lay Emily Eagen, a friend visiting for a couple of weeks. Both of the 19-year-olds were dead from gunshot wounds.

One was nude and the other only partially clothed, according to Costa Rican authorities.

Their car, set on fire, was discovered almost an hour's drive away. Howell, who graduated from Lafayette High School in 1997, went to the country in January for a co-op program sponsored by her school, Antioch University in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
