Secretary of State Powell Postpones Bahamas Trip

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell has postponed a trip to the Bahamas next Monday because a tax treaty between the two countries is not yet ready, a State Department official said on Thursday.

He will reschedule the one-day visit for another time yet to be decided, the official added.

The proposed tax treaty would make it harder for criminals to use the Bahamas, an Atlantic archipelago of 280,000 people, for tax avoidance and money laundering activities.

Powell had planned to exchange views on drug smuggling, illegal migration, financial reform, HIV/AIDS prevention and regional issues, the State Department said on Tuesday.
