Atlanta strip club trial halted

ATLANTA
(August 1, 2001 11:45 a.m. EDT ) - Testimony in the Gold Club trial was abruptly canceled Wednesday, and the proceedings were put on hold, with no explanation from defense attorneys and prosecutors.
Lawyers from both sides were meeting at the federal courthouse, but would not comment on why testimony was stopped.
The trial involving the Atlanta strip club is in its 14th week and was expected to last into the fall.
Prosecutors say club owner Steve Kaplan used the lure of sex to attract professional athletes and celebrities while cheating customers to funnel cash to New York's Gambino crime family. Kaplan and six others are charged with obstruction, credit card fraud, loan sharking, prostitution and other charges.
Basketball star Patrick Ewing and Atlanta Braves outfielder Andruw Jones have testified they received sexual favors at Gold Club parties while Kaplan and others watched.
