THE GOLD CLUB TRIAL

Gold Club owner Steve Kaplan and six associates earned millions from the nude club, one of the most profitable in the country, and bought protection from the Gambino crime family.

A federal indictment says they provided prostitutes for big-name athletes and cheated customers by overbilling their credit cards. Club employees also are accused of sending women to Miami, Las Vegas, and Minneapolis for sex with celebrities and other customers, prosecutors say.

Kaplan and his co-defendants are charged with loan sharking, money laundering, and bribing police officers, and Kaplan is accused of ordering more than 20 beatings of people who did not repay high-interest loans.

Defense attorneys say the government has exaggerated the club's ties to celebrities and the mob to paint it as a den of sin.
