Much as the loony left would like it, they aren't going to take our guns away. It is likely that we will see some measures to make it easier to recognize people with mental issues and violent tendancies and get them into treatment as well as bar them from legal ownership of firearms. We will also likey see renewed emphasis on the admonition "If you see something, say something.". On the face of it, both of those could be helpful, but there might be considerable downsides to both if carried too far. To wit:

If we start identifying people who allegedly have mental problems and violent tendencies and getting them into evaluation and then treatment, how will people be thus identified? Who will decide that they need evaluated? And how easy might it be to simply haul in people who are a bit "different" or people who love guns? On whose authority will they be sent to treatment? And, here is the clincher: What will that treatment consist of? You can safely bet a dime to a dollar that the treatment and perhaps even evaluations in many instances will be performed by psychiatrists. Psychiatrists who dearly love to take out their prescription pads and prescribe PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS. Yep, the same drugs that are the common thread in well over 90% of mass shootings! What could go wrong?

Next there is the issue of having people tell on other people. No doubt, in many instances people should have spoken up and it might have stopped many of the mass shootings and bombings - if the FBI cared to listen and do something about it that is. But how easy would it be to go to far with the idea of reporting everything we deem to be suspicious or perhaps even things we don't like about our neighbors? If people start reporting every non-conformist thing they see, it might be "Hello Big Brother" time. 1984. If you haven't read the book, you should. Could cameras in every room and signs that say "Confrom" and "Obey" be very far behind?

I'm just full of good news today, aren't I? I think it is time for me to go to the pasture and spend the night around a comforting campfire, looking at the stars and howling at the moon with the coyotes!
