My sister smoked cigarettes for many decades and was also apparently addicted to aspartame, consuming lots of diet soda each day.

Following mastectomy and radiation 'therapy' for diagnosed breast cancer, it turned out she had an ascending aorta aneurysm (AAA) that would have been difficult, at her age, to correct surgically. So she endured it, knowing that one day she might (as she put it) explode like a cartoon cat. :)
