Frankfurt, Heidelberg - North Korea has succeeded in reaching equipment and technology for its ballistic missile program through its embassy in Berlin, according to Hans Georg Masen, the first man of the German State Security Service (BfV).
"We estimated that the procurement went from here (from the North Korean embassy in Berlin), and in our opinion, it all served as a rocket program, but to a certain extent for a nuclear program," said Masen, but he did not say precisely what kind technology and equipment has been procured, but only in terms of elements that can be used for civilian purposes, but also for wars.
According to Masen, parts for the Pyongyang ballistic and nuclear program are "purchased in other markets or through the mysterious companies they have acquired in Germany."
In a research documentary, NDR Television reported that BfV received information about these North Korean purchases in 2016 and 2017, whereby the equipment purchased was allegedly used for the missile program. As reported by the NDR, a North Korean diplomat allegedly attempted in 2014 to obtain a "multi-monitor monitor", which is otherwise used in the development of chemical weapons.
According to Western media reports, North Korean diplomats play a key role in the development of banned North Korean weapons programs, allegedly providing logistical support for the transfer of weapons, military technicians and contributing to intelligence operations.
The latest report by the United Nations states that in the nine months of 2017 North Korea managed to export products prohibited by UN sanctions, earning $ 200 million. The authors of this report also point out that Pyongyang has military cooperation projects with countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, selling Myanmar's ballistic missile system, while Syria may be assisting in a chemical weapons program.
Despite the German intelligence claims that the North Korean embassy in Berlin is used to violate UN sanctions imposed on Pyongyang, the official Berlin does not intend to end these diplomatic relations. At the end of November last year, the US State Department demanded that countries that have not yet severed diplomatic relations with North Korea, specifying in particular Germany to "recall their ambassadors" in Pyongyang, as well as "reduce the presence of North Korea in any of these countries" . But very quickly, from Berlin, decidedly "no" arrived. The government's transatlantic co-operation co-ordinator and Chancellor Angela Merkel's Chancellor Jürgen Hart rejected this request, pointing out that Germany "should not comply" with this Washington request.
"We can not rely only on the Chinese or Russian Embassy in North Korea," he said at the time, adding that "it is good for Europe, and therefore for the West, that it is anchored in the German Embassy in Pyongyang."
German diplomatic relations with Pyongyang are a good part of the heritage of the former intimate relations of communist East Germany with North Korea. However, Berlin's influence on the leadership in Pyongyang actually does not exist, but German diplomats increasingly have the role of observers while the main players are Chinese and Russian ambassadors. Germany, however, still hopes that it could be a kind of intermediary between North and South Korea, but it is fundamentally difficult to seriously affect the events in the Korean Peninsula because it does not have a respectable military force
