My eyes widened when I saw mention of Winston Churchill in this excerpt from the Wikipedia article about the massive Crystal Palace in London being destroyed by fire late November 30, 1936:
"On 30 November 1936 came the final catastrophe – fire...even though 89 fire engines and over 400 firemen arrived they were unable to extinguish it... Buckland said, "In a few hours we have seen the end of the Crystal Palace. Yet it will live in the memories not only of Englishmen, but the whole world". 100,000 people came to Sydenham Hill to watch the blaze, among them Winston Churchill, who said, "This is the end of an age"."

The fire was discovered at 7:30 p.m. November 30 and burned well into the next day, Tuesday December 1, 1936:

(Or rather, four airliners were involved that day in four crashes that caused earthquakes)
