TEHRAN, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Iranian private sectors and entities are allowed to import aircraft, Iran Civil Aviation Organization Director Alireza Jahangirian was quoted as saying by Tehran Times daily on Wednesday.

Jahangirian pointed to high capacity of activities in Iran's aviation industry, saying that Iran's aviation fleet transported over 25 million passengers and 100,000 tons of goods in the previous Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20, 2014).

This was "despite the problems caused by the western sanctions on the country's aviation industry," the Iranian official made the remarks on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Iran Air Show 2014 which is underway on the Persian Gulf island of Kish.

Iran was under the U.S. and the EU sanctions for decades over the country's controversial nuclear program.

Under the interim nuclear deal between Iran the P5+1 group -- including the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia plus Germany -- in November 2013, Iran gained limited relief from western sanctions. Iran also agreed to limit certain aspects of its nuclear program.

The agreement provided an opportunity for commercial airplane manufacturers to venture into Iran's civil aviation market legally.
