The demolition of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition buildings began in earnest in 1894 — a clearance campaign whose speed and comprehensiveness we've examined in previous videos. The architectural and engineering professionals who had been involved in the exposition's design and construction were consulted in varying degrees on the demolition planning.

One architect whose role in the exposition's design had given him the most extensive knowledge of the buildings' actual construction characteristics refused to participate in the demolition authorization process — declined to sign the professional certifications whose accumulation the demolition contractors required, filed a written objection with the Chicago architectural establishment describing his reasons, and maintained that objection across the years of his subsequent career until his death. In his final years, he described what the demolition had destroyed that the official account of the White City's construction had never acknowledged. 🏛️
