Infectious disease experts shoot down ivermectin as hantavirus cure

In response to questions about the theories online, Dr. Joseph Vinetz, an infectious disease doctor at Yale School of Medicine, told NewsNation, “Ivermectin does not work” to treat hantavirus, also known as the Andes virus.

“Ivermectin is pretty harmless, and I use it all of the time for patients, like for scabies. But it does not work for hantavirus,” he said...

Jill Roberts, a professor at the University of South Florida College of Public Health, cited the call to use ivermectin as “misinformation.”

“Antimicrobials rarely work well across microbial categories,” Roberts said. “While ivermectin is very effective at deworming horses (antiparasitic), it is unlikely to be an effective antiviral drug. Hantavirus may be treated with ribavirin, an antiviral drug, and it is typically used along with supportive medical care (respiratory support, etc).”
