Between 1854 and 1929, an estimated 250,000 children were loaded onto trains in New York City and shipped westward across the United States. They were orphans, street children, and in many cases, children who still had living parents but had been surrendered to institutions that promised them a better life.

Instead, they were transported in groups to rural towns across the Midwest and West, lined up on platforms, and handed to strangers who chose them the way you'd choose livestock at auction. This was the Orphan Train Movement — and it was considered charity. 🚂

In this video, we follow the account of one of the last surviving riders of the orphan trains — a woman who, decades later, retraced the exact route she had been carried along as a child in 1918.
