SACRAMENTO — Dozens of California Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, called Friday for Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Castro Valley, to end his campaign for governor after the Chronicle reported allegations that he sexually assaulted a former staffer.

The calls for Swalwell to drop out of the race, including from his closest allies and his rivals for the governorship, came swiftly on Friday afternoon after the Chronicle reported that a former staffer for the congressman said she had sexual encounters with him while he was her boss and alleged he twice sexually assaulted her when she was too intoxicated to consent.

“This extremely sensitive matter must be appropriately investigated with full transparency and accountability,” Pelosi, who helped Swalwell rise in power during seven terms in Congress, said in a statement. “As I discussed with Congressman Swalwell, it is clear that is best done outside of a gubernatorial campaign.”

Swalwell denied the woman’s allegations.
