In 2020, Wuhan was a major pilot city and key hub for 5G, with the local government aiming to deploy over 20,000 5G base stations by year's end to cover all urban areas. While not the sole "first" city in China—as 5G rolled out simultaneously in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou—Wuhan was heavily promoted as a model for 5G integration in central China, especially for smart city applications, transportation, and industrial use. They deny this had anything to do with the "virus," but sometimes the "coincidence" is too much to explain as not done on purpose, especially with 250 Million cellphones going offline in China right after.

Wuhan acted as a premier demonstration city, especially after the 7th CISM Military World Games (Oct 2019), where 5G was extensively used. Its 5G infrastructure was integral to post-lockdown smart urban management, making it one of the most advanced 5G "smart" cities in China during 2020.
