Assuming the gospels to be true:

The roman ship of state crucified what it perceived to be a dangerous political dissident to its mast and yard. (The political symbol is cross.) His name was Jesus. He was as dead as the wood he was nailed to.

This was inarguably a victory for the ship no matter how short lived it might be. Therefore the upright cross symbolizes victory over Jesus.

In the opposite corner of the ring we have the Satanists rallying proudly and defiantly around their inverted cross.

When you think about it the inverted cross would symbolize the risen Jesus and the reversal of the roman ship of state victory over Jesus. It would represent the ship of state as capsized with keel up and mast down, hence inverted cross.

So, in one corner of the ring the Jesusists are using the roman ship of state symbol of victory (upright cross) over their god for their banner while in the other corner of the ring the Satanists are using the symbol of the risen Jesus (inverted cross) victorious over the ship for their banner.

You might wonder where all of these votive energies are going on both sides.

In the middle of the ring stand Jesus and Satan in a mutual state of !!! WTF !!! with Jesus wondering how he ended up back on the ship of state that killed him and Satan wondering how he missed the ship he was supposed to be on.

Above all of this the Cosmic Butterfly looks down with the somber realization that he is just simple arithmetic beneath the incalculable nature of man.
