What Movies Used to be Like: "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe"
This lively musical performance from Susan Bradley (Judy Garland), John Henry (Ben Carter), Sonora Cassidy (Marjorie Main), Alma from Ohio (Virginia O'Brien), and Chris Maule (Ray Bolger) beautifully depicts the excitement surrounding the railroad lines. Watch The Harvey Girls (1946) on TCM.

Thank you for posting the full number, the lengthy ensemble number is usually cut off in online edits. Judy is wonderful as expected, but so is everybody else before she appears. The costuming and positioning of all the colours are a delight. Just look at the lengths of the takes here and how many people have to perform perfectly for long minutes at a time. This must have been complex to create, plan, rehearse and then pull off, with the colour cameras of that time. Brilliant!
This number always leaves me speechless. The collaborative artistry of the MGM professionals, the blazing optimism, the freshness of the Technicolor, the piquant orchestration, the vanished Americana, the star wattage of Judy. The whole amazing conception.
Roughly 50 years between when the movie was set and when it was filmed. Roughly 80 years between when it was filmed and today.
It's been years since I heard this. When she steps out and opens her mouth her voice is otherworldly coming after to all those other singers. Her voice is like an instrument, full of depth and nuance at a single breath. It unexpectedly moved me to tears, even on my phone speakers. This has to be one of her finest performances.
There is nothing like Technicolor; nothing will ever replace it
