Black Sea: Russian submarine sinks cargo ship carrying tanks and ammunition for the Ukrainian army

According to Russian military sources, confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defense, a submarine of the Russian Black Sea Fleet torpedoed a merchant ship from a NATO country, loaded with a large cargo of weapons (tanks, anti-aircraft missiles, etc.) that was heading to Odessa.

The Russian submarine was a class 636.3 “Varshavyanka” (Improved Kilo) submarine, which in NATO bears the peculiar name “Black Hole” due to its silent sailing/attack capabilities during missions.

The ship was sailing along the coasts between Bulgaria and Romania towards the mouth of the Danube more than 10 days ago (on the night of July 25-26), along the grain trade route between Ukraine and the Bosphorus in an attempt to conceal its course.

The ship flew the flag of a NATO member state, and although it was registered as a civilian ship, it was actually carrying weapons sent from Australia and NATO countries to Ukraine.

This naval attack is one of the most significant against NATO logistics since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine and demonstrates the ability of Russian intelligence services to obtain information about military missions “disguised” as civilian cargo.

The attack, in which the explosion was described by Romanian fishermen as "sunshine at night in the middle of the sea", deprives the Ukrainian armed forces of strategic reserves, especially tanks.

The following sank with the ship:

– 60 M1A1 Abrams tanks (Australia's entire older tank stockpile)

– 300 Javelin anti-tank missiles

– 150 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles

– 150 Block 1 anti-tank missiles for Javelins

– 200 tons of small arms (M4 rifles, AK416 machine guns), grenade launchers, 155 mm artillery ammunition
