Insane that they are promoting even more vaccines. I do understand that they (the victims) don't know what else to do.

That being said, nobody I ever knew (since 1975, that is when I got my first pony...) vaccinated their horses for rabies. And nobody I ever knew had a horse with rabies. I have never heard of a horse with rabies. Until now. I saw this last week, and then I saw your post, Crystal.

Now it makes more sense.

I have worked on this horse for a very long time. He was the best polite, kind and well mannered. Unfortunately this horse contracted rabies. The owner of horse as seen in video had difficulty unloading him because he was extremely agitated and aggressive. After his mannerisms before and after getting him off trailer I was confident he had rabies. Temperature was 107.5 and he was uncontrollable. There was no amount of tranquilizer that made him reasonably calm.

The videos were at the clinic that show his debilitating disease at work causing him to lose his mind. Obviously he had an aggressive form of rabies.

I have been in practice 21 years and I have never seen anything like this. We take for granted that rabies is rare but it has been very prominent in last year. We as veterinarians and horse owners need to do better about including this as a routine vaccine. I promise I will do better to urge my clients to vaccinate for this disease.

The state lab just confirmed what Dr Murray knew: a horse presented with symptoms of the “mad” form of rabies. It was euthanized and the brain sent in for testing.
The lab confirmed a positive and said it was the MOST positive case they had ever seen.

I wasn’t at work that day but watched on camera and it was heartbreaking to see just how awful this virus is: constant agitation, appeared “blind” attacking anything and everything to the point it broke its own teeth and jaw. It broke ALL of its teeth out of its head, spewibg blood and saliva everywhere . Sedatives did not work; drugs administered in what could be fatal doses did not affect this horse.

Rabies is nothing to take lightly. It is FATAL. There are multiple people exposed and the state vet and health department will sort that out.

There have been 4-5 local reports of rabies with one in a backyard pet dog.
People GET YOUR ANIMALS VACCINATED. KEEP THEM VACCINATED. Your pets, your horses! A simple yearly vaccine would have protected this horse and its owner.

Call your veterinarian and get your animals protected.
In the 40+ years I’ve been in veterinary medicine this was the most horrific case I’ve ever seen. “Mad “ doesn’t even come close to what this poor animal went through before it died.
The message is this: rabies is fatal. It can be vaccinated against. Rabies is not eradicated. It exists and is spread thru saliva/ bites from a positive host.
Do the right thing and protect your animals. (And yourself!)
