The Hidden Backbone: OpenYurt and the Edge Grid

Open yurt isn’t a household name. It’s not trending on X, and it doesn’t make headlines on your nightly news. But this open-source project, released by Alibaba Cloud in 2020, may be the most important software you’ve never heard of.

Built to extend Kubernetes—cloud infrastructure software—to edge devices, OpenYurt allows centralized control over thousands of nodes spread across cities: surveillance towers, streetlights, drones, biometric kiosks, environmental sensors. These nodes gather data, run algorithms, and execute responses autonomously, while staying synced with a master cloud.

They call it “orchestration.” But orchestration of what, exactly?
