UN warns of new migrant crisis as Israel and Iran continue strikes: LIVE UPDATES
The Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees has urged the sides to deescalate, warning the conflict could trigger generational shifts.
The UN has warned that the conflict between Israel and Iran could trigger a new migrant crisis and has called for deescalation, as the two nations have traded strikes since last week.
US President Donald Trump stated earlier that he will decide within two weeks “at maximum” whether the US will join Israel’s campaign against Iran, adding that it is difficult to push for a ceasefire and negotiations when one side is clearly “winning.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that if Washington is serious about a peaceful resolution, Trump only needs to make one phone call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israeli strikes have killed at least 430 Iranians, with more than 3,500 civilians injured, according to the Health Ministry in Tehran, although other sources have given a higher estimate of the death toll. Israeli officials have reported 25 deaths and more than 2,500 injuries.
As the conflict enters its second week, Israel launched a new wave of strikes on dozens of targets in Iran, including missile production sites, while Iran fired a barrage of missiles that struck the strategic port city of Haifa.
Netanyahu has said Operation Rising Lion – a series of missile attacks on Iran – has significantly damaged the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. Israel claims to have struck key nuclear sites at Natanz, Isfahan, and the Arak heavy water reactor. The IAEA has confirmed damage to facilities in Natanz and Isfahan.
Russia has condemned Israel’s initial airstrikes and called for de-escalation. President Vladimir Putin spoke with Trump by phone and held separate conversations with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Netanyahu to explore measures for de-escalation and the possibility of reviving negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

A spokesperson for Yemen’s Houthis has warned that “if the US gets involved in an attack and aggression against Iran with the Israeli enemy, [the Shiite militant group] will target its ships and warships in the Red Sea.”
Following the start of Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in Gaza in 2023, the Houthis began attacking merchant vessels passing through the Red Sea that they believed were Israeli-owned or -operated, as well as those from countries supporting Israel. In May, the armed group agreed to a ceasefire with the US, pledging to cease attacks on ships in exchange for Washington halting strikes on the Houthis’ military infrastructure in Yemen.

A senior Iranian official cited by Reuters has called the proposals presented by European powers during Friday’s nuclear talks in Geneva “unrealistic,” warning that insisting on them would make an agreement difficult to achieve.

Qatar’s prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, has reiterated his nation’s “strong condemnation and denunciation of the Israeli aggression against Iranian territory.”

The Iranian authorities are ready to handle the fallout from the Israeli attacks, including a potential radioactive leak, Deputy Health Minister Ali Jafarian has said, as quoted by Al Jazeera.
”We have not yet received reports of Israel using unconventional weapons. We are prepared to deal with any nuclear leak in the event that nuclear reactors are targeted, and we hope we do not reach that stage,” Jafarian said, accusing Israel of targeting three hospitals.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has urged Israel and Iran to de-escalate the conflict, warning that the exchange of strikes “is already triggering population movements in both countries.”
“This region has already endured more than its share of war, loss, and displacement – we cannot allow another refugee crisis to take root,” the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said, warning that “once people are forced to flee, there’s no quick way back – and all too often, the consequences last for generations.”
