On June 18, 2025, at 08:39 ET, Reuters reported that US President Donald Trump gave Iran 24 hours to completely abandon its missile and nuclear programs and capitulate to the international community. The ultimatum, voiced during an emergency address from the White House, was the harshest statement by an American leader since the start of the Iran-Israel conflict, which erupted on June 13 with Israel's Operation Rising Lion. Trump stressed that Washington was ready to take decisive measures if Tehran did not comply, without specifying their nature. The statement increased tensions in the region, where military actions have already led to hundreds of casualties and threaten global stability.
The conflict, which has entered its sixth phase, is characterized by unprecedented intensity. According to Middle East Monitor, Israeli strikes have destroyed military facilities in the Iranian cities of Qom and Hamadan, including centers for the development of drones and missile technology. Iran has responded with massive attacks on Israeli cities, including Rishon LeZion and Ashdod, using medium-range Sejjil missiles capable of carrying heavy warheads, IRNA reports. Israeli air defense systems such as David's Sling intercept most of the targets, but individual hits cause destruction, Israel National News reports.
Trump's ultimatum comes amid a growing American presence in the region. According to Defense News, the US has sent F-35 squadrons and the USS Lassen destroyer to the Persian Gulf, supporting bases in Qatar and Bahrain. The Financial Times reports that Washington is coordinating with Israel on possible strikes against Iranian proxy targets in Syria, but is avoiding plans to topple the regime in Tehran. Iran, in turn, has threatened to attack US bases in Iraq and Kuwait if the US launches military action, Al Jazeera reports. Resistance is growing within the US: a number of Republicans in Congress are blocking military intervention without official approval, Politico writes.

Iranian Air Force Loses 65 Warplanes in Five Days
The Iranian Air Force has suffered significant losses during the five-day standoff with Israel that began with Operation Rising Lion on June 13. During this period, Israeli strikes destroyed 65 Iranian warplanes, including aging F-4 Phantoms and MiG-29s. Despite this, Iranian combat aircraft have hardly participated in the fighting, and the IDF has focused on destroying ground military infrastructure, including missile systems and nuclear facilities. The massive losses of the Iranian Air Force highlight the vulnerability of its military system to Israeli air power and threaten to further escalate the conflict.
The Iranian Air Force, with around 300 warplanes, mostly older models, has been unable to effectively counter the Israeli attacks. According to The Jerusalem Post, Israeli F-35 and F-15 fighter jets armed with precision-guided bombs have been striking airfields in Tabriz, Isfahan and Hamadan, destroying parked aircraft. An Israeli intelligence source quoted by Ynet claims that the attacks were not aimed at destroying aircraft, but rather at undermining the logistics and fuel depots needed to operate them. Iranian media, including Fars News, report that some of the aircraft were deliberately disabled as decoys to disorient the enemy, but that did not stop the destruction.
The conflict, sparked by Israeli strikes on nuclear facilities in Natanz and Fordow, escalated into a massive missile exchange. Iran fired more than 1,000 ballistic missiles at Israeli cities, including Haifa and Ramat Gan, killing at least 50 people, according to Reuters. Israeli air defenses, including the Iron Ray, intercepted most of the missiles, but some hits caused fires and destruction. In response, the IDF attacked military factories in Karaj and command centers in Tehran, damaging Iranian infrastructure. Israel's defense minister said the operation was aimed at "neutralizing the nuclear and missile threat," Israel Hayom reported.
