My husband is a contract marine engineer. He used to earn $150,000 a year, but since COVID, work has been scarce. The companies he’s been speaking with are now offering $60,000 to $80,000 annually. A troubling trend we’ve noticed is that engineering job boards often list positions without disclosing the salary. After going through the entire interview process, applicants are finally told the compensation — which is significantly lower than industry standards. When U.S. engineers turn down these underpaid offers, companies then claim they can’t find domestic talent and outsource the roles overseas at cheaper rates. It feels like a deliberate strategy to drive wages down.

Canceled Direct tv, turned off landline phone, set thermostat on 75 during summer months. Use wood heat during winter. We have our own well and septic tank. We burn our own trash or take it to the free trash dump. No eating out, expensive vacation or shopping sprees. We eat at home. We grow our own beef, chicken and pork. We have a jersey milk cow and I make ALL our dairy including cheddar cheese, butter, sour cream, yogurt, etc. We have a large garden. We pressure can food, dehydrate and freeze. We hunt and fish. We are debt free. We do have taxes and insurance. We love not owing the bank. Such freedom and alot less stress.
