I have heard rumors of hummers having returned to my neck of the woods already - almost a month earlier than usual! I shall have to make sure all my hummer feeders are clean and ready to go. Usually I hear them before I see them, so I'll have to listen while I'm watching for the first official arrival. Such very tiny and energy consuming flyers are VERY sensitive to toxins in this toxic world. It is SO important to keep their feeders clean and free of mold, and to keep their "nectar" free of mold and fungus by changing it every 2-3 days. I go through LOTS of peroxide and up to 40 pounds of sugar every summer. Unfortunately, when I first started to feed hummers, I went through up to 60 pounds of sugar in a summer. However, their numbers have dwindled noticeably over the years. All the more reason to help Mother Earth in order to protect her plant and animal life!! Happy hummer watching!!!
