Donald Trump has doubled down on his plans to 'buy and own' Gaza in spite of mounting global outrage, casting doubt over the future of the region amid a fragile and ongoing exchange of hostages and prisoners between Israel and Hamas.

'I'm committed to buying and owning Gaza,' he told reporters onboard Air Force One as he made his way to New Orleans for the Super Bowl.

'We may give it to other states in the Middle East to build sections of it. Other people may do it through our auspices. But we're committed to owning it, taking it, and making sure that Hamas doesn't move back.'

Trump appeared to try to justify the plan, which threatens to undo decades of international diplomacy, by saying civilians have 'nothing to move back to' in the wake of Israel's extensive military campaign in the Gaza Strip.

He said that the 'remainder will be demolished' and insisted that Arab nations would agree to take Palestinians after speaking with him.
