The knife was twisted deeper into the heart of the First Amendment with the “so sorry” letter by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He is so sorry he colluded with the government to violate the free speech rights of all Americans. He regrets interfering with the 2020 election by using his powerful media platform to censor information and silence his fellow citizens. He’s so sorry for burying information about the Hunter Biden “laptop from hell” and suppressing concerns of Americans questioning the validity of Covid-19 government mandates and vaccines.

Yes, Zuckerberg is suddenly very sorry. He told us so in an August 26, 2024, letter of apology he wrote to the House Judiciary Committee. He didn’t mean to serve as an instrument for the U.S. government to violate Americans’ free speech rights.

As the owner of the world’s largest and maybe most influential social media platform, Zuckerberg is a crucial piece of the ruling party’s communications infrastructure and, more importantly, its censorship regime. He’s a player who took his marching orders, and like a good comrade, Zuckerberg did what he was told. Could he really believe that Americans accept his regrets?

Consider the 2016 presidential election. Republican candidate Donald Trump used Facebook to circumvent traditional media and reach his audience. After he won, Zuckerberg was held accountable for Trump’s victory, including by party boss Barack Obama, who pulled him aside at a conference in Peru days after the election to read him the riot act. Zuckerberg had allowed his platform to spread “Russian disinformation,” claimed the media reports.

As for the 2020 election and spending more than $400 million to assist the Democrats’ voter campaign, well, he said he learned his lesson about that. In the letter, he wrote, “I don’t plan on making a similar contribution this cycle.”

Why the letter and why now?

When it comes to Republicans, he could care less. He can send a letter to a congressional committee saying sorry without sweating the consequences. The fake apology that GOP House members are calling a big win is nothing but a slap in the face.

It’s not our elected representatives who feel the brunt of it, but us. Zuckerberg, in cahoots with government factions, violated our rights, our right to speak and assemble freely, to make choices about our own health, to choose our leaders, and we demand accountability. And that’s going to take a lot more than a letter dictated by a big tech oligarch and mailed off to an easily appeased congressional committee.
