It is difficult to get unbiased news on the war since both sides give a slanted view on ongoing events. However, after viewing both sides' views of military events, it is clear that Ukraine was successful in a surprise invasion of Southern Russia.
Russia counter attacked with bombing runs and hundreds of have been killed on both sides. But the continued incursion is still ongoing as the Russians shut down a nuclear plant and all the workers were evacuated. The Russian actions show they expect the Nuke plant to be attacked at this time.
Meanwhile the Russians are in the process of relocating ground troops in the tens of thousands to this southern Russia area. But their arrival has not taken place yet.

To the average observer it would appear that this invasion by a weakened Ukraine army was foolhardy and suicidal.
