This week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a major recall of hundreds of canned coffee products due to concerns about possible botulism contamination. The recall was initiated by Snapchill LLC, a Wisconsin-based company, which is voluntarily recalling over 250 of its products that were distributed nationwide to various roasters and vendors, as well as directly sold to consumers online.

The FDA highlighted issues with the manufacturing practices used to produce the canned coffee. Specifically, the agency pointed out that Snapchill did not notify it of its use of a low acid production method for these goods. Such a method can pose significant risks, including the growth and contamination of the potentially deadly botulinum toxin.

Botulism is a severe form of food poisoning that results from ingesting botulinum toxin. Symptoms can include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, abdominal enlargement and discomfort, and difficulties with breathing, speaking, or swallowing. These symptoms can manifest between six hours to two weeks after exposure and require urgent medical intervention. Botulism can be fatal if not appropriately and promptly treated.

The recalled products are packaged in metal cans ranging from 7 oz to 12 oz and are available at numerous retail outlets under various brand names. Consumers can identify the recalled coffee by checking for the label “Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC” located under the nutritional facts panel on the packaging.
