I can't help but notice that the annual Winter Solstice (the shortest day of the year) doesn't attract nearly the same level of hype and fear as the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th.

Today I want to talk about the upcoming total solar eclipse on Tuesday. There is a huge amount of hype around this eclipse, and it got me thinking...

Are we still this primitive?

I ask this question because there is still so much superstition and excess meaning attached to this very normal cosmic event. Did you know that a total solar eclipse happens on Earth 2 to 5 times every 18 months? I would take a guess that the vast majority of total solar eclipses on Earth have gone unnoticed by most.

So the idea that this is some sort of groundbreaking event just because more people can see it causes me to believe that we still have a very long way to go on this planet. It shows that we don't see ourselves from a cosmic perspective at the most basic level of understanding. And that would be a basic, experiential understanding of the beautiful dance of movement between the Earth, the moon, and the sun. That movement represents a continuous flow of cosmic energy that we are meant to be a part of. We are meant to flow with it as a natural part of our existence here in our solar system.

And yes, we can marvel at the beauty and energy of solar and lunar eclipses, which are amazing! But while we're at it, why don't we also marvel at the beauty of changing light every time our planet moves from day to night, and night to day? And how about the breathtaking amazingness of the changing seasons, which are also a function of Earth's relationship to the sun? Can you imagine how powerful it would be to consciously embrace this greater whole in our everyday experience? By blowing up this one solar eclipse way out of proportion, it seems to me that we actually disconnect ourselves from the beauty of a much larger cosmic experience.

Now there are those who will argue that bad things have happened during solar eclipses, and that we should pay attention. Well, I would argue that plenty of bad things have happened on other days, too. And there are plenty of eclipses that go by where nothing out of the ordinary happens. To me, this kind of thinking sounds rather superstitious. Like being afraid of a black cat crossing your path. Or walking under a ladder.

Let's look at the reality of this current situation in modern times. I mean let's face it — an incoming total solar eclipse serves as a massive opportunity for click bait! And big-time advertising dollars for the media outlets who hype it up.

Have you heard about this eclipse being used by the government to practice for martial law? Yes, indeed! The fact that certain government or military assets are being mobilized just proves that fact, according to some. "It's a conspiracy!" they say. "It's a secret plot!"

No. This is actually standard practice when you have millions of people converging in certain areas because they want to see the eclipse in person. And I kind of understand that because the moment of totality in a solar eclipse only occurs in one place every 300 to 400 years. So naturally, governments want to be prepared for such a large convergence of people in one spot.

To me, the fact that we treat this like such a bizarre spectacle illustrates our still very primitive nature as humans on this planet. We are told that a total solar eclipse is "a strange and rare event!". No it's not. As I said, it happens 2 to 5 times on Earth every 18 months. We are told that it signals "the end of days 😱!" Well, I've heard that one before. And we're still here.

Fear! Prophecy! End times! Government conspiracies! A state of emergency!? (Yes, because declaring a state of emergency is how they can release funds quickly in case millions of people do something stupid or crazy 🫣.)

I guess my perspective would not be popular in spiritual or political circles. But that's okay! I just prefer to stay connected to the beauty of nature in all of its magnificent cosmic displays. To me it's just as simple as that.
