The Swedish authorities have officially announced their entry into NATO.

Sweden's prime minister said on Wednesday she intends to make a decision on NATO membership early enough that it doesn't clash with a general election this September, as her Finnish counterpart said her country would make a decision "within a few weeks." It is expected that the relevant application for Sweden's entry into NATO will be submitted within the next few weeks, and already on June 29, during the next summit of the North Atlantic Alliance, this application will be officially considered.

Swedish Prime Minister Eva Magdalena Andersson emphasized that she would follow the course of joining NATO together with Finland, moreover, at the end of June, the Alliance could immediately increase by two new members.

“Speaking at a joint press conference in Stockholm with Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, Andersson said that while Sweden will take as long as necessary to properly assess the changed security situation, it will not drag out the process unnecessarily. “I don’t see the point in postponing this analysis or process,” she said. “We will also have elections in September, so we certainly want to pay more attention to them later this year ,” reports The Local.

Earlier, Russia declared the inadmissibility of NATO expansion, calling on the Alliance to return to the influence of a military bloc in 1997, however, NATO emphasized that they did not intend to follow Russia's demands.

“The entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO will pose a very serious threat to Russia. Given Stoltenberg's recent announcement of the deployment of numerous forces on the eastern flank, Russia will now almost certainly become the target of the Alliance , ”the specialist notes.
